Route to Roots was a project that explored the role, use and significance of Carnival arts as one of the mediums through which creative knowledge networks can be fostered across key points in the African diaspora: Africa, the Caribbean and the UK. The project brought together creative artists working in diverse art forms such as music, fine arts, theatre, dance, masquerade and carnival for a 7-day residency culminating in a public performance installation at the Butetown Carnival and the Hub Festival in Cardiff. This project was rooted in research on Carnival as a performance of re-presentation and aimed to engage ways in which heritage and stories of historical, philosophical, spiritual significance from the African diasporic experience can be shared and then re-presented through costume, music and dance in a public space.
The Route to Roots project was in partnership with Ffotogallery and funded by Arts Council Wales.
