A k u z u r u is an avant-garde TransDisciplinary artist whose praxis straddles multiple approaches . Primarily environmental, using vast spaces in the natural world whilst connected to the spatial appropriations of architectural spaces, her other worldly forms in her epic performative aktivations and installations inoculate into the viewer deeply indelible multi sensorial emotive experiences . Armed with a 30 year practice , the visionary artist has established a multi-faceted lexicon, with a deep reverence for the living natural world with metaphysics being central to her process. Her iconic Obstructive Constructions and Healing Chambers, are Total Art experiences -intense mystical multi- genre constructions involving a vibrant experimental thrust in her process. Her work has been exhibited world wide at prestigious institutions including PAMM in the U S and the Museum Buccheim in Germany. Her works featured in numerous important art publications , the artist has received several international awards including the Prince Claus Fund Netherlands, the City of Munich Germany and the Commonwealth Foundation UK.
Born in Port of Spain- Trinidad and Tobago, the artist has established herself as a pioneer in the radical presence-ing of performance art in Trinidad and the Caribbean during several years. Her broad artistic foundations ranged from formative studies in classical music, the dynamic musical art-form of the steel pan orchestral phenomena, classical and contemporary dance, to her many experiences having participated in the famous performance traditions of the multi-layered Trinidad Carnival.
Also, having lived, studied and practiced in the UK and Nigeria for many years, A k u z u r u’s evolvement as an artist has exhibited a steady embrace of performance art, and interdisciplinary practice which expanded her metaphysical practice through the dynamic intersection of the human and natural world enabling her study of the science of space, light, sound, silence, stillness, movement, gesture and nuance which are deeply felt in her works.
A k u z u r u has undertaken several international art residencies, presented solo exhibitions along with group shows, notably in the Bone Festival of Performance Art in Switzerland; the Nottinghill Carnival in London; LIFT-London International Festival of Theatre in London; The London Samba Festival, London; solo at the Goethe Institut-Lagos in Nigeria; the 2nd. Biennale de la Martinique; Braziers Residency, Oxford UK; Rockstone & Bootheel ,Real Art Ways-USA; the COCO Dance Festival- Trinidad; solo at the National Museum of Trinidad & Tobago; solo exhibition at the Caribbean Contemporary Arts (CCA) and not least including her expansive project Earthology India, presented in India in several components, including a major solo exhibition at the Gallery Sumukha in Bangalore.
Her project -Earthology- is an epic ongoing global opus .
